Some 10 years ago I completed an IAM riding course, one of its main aims was to get the pupil to make progress if safe to do so.
With the increase in traffic volumes, incar enterainment, countryside being opened up for recreational use and the very poor state of our highways since I did my training, I think it is time for change.
Advance motorcycling courses should be about safety only IMHO, gaining the 'view' to maxiumise speed through country lanes is a thing of the past.

Has rider training altered since I did my training?
What are your thoughts on the subject and is IAM training courses, now of any use to the biker that only rides carefully, so does not want to 'make progress' in the first place.

I suppose if the training is aimed at people with sports bikes who by their nature are going to try and ride as fast as possible in all situations then the make progress routine may indeed result in an increase in safety. For an experienced rider who is intent on riding at his or her own pace then the make progress routine makes little sense. I do feel however that any training undertaken helps rider awareness and self assessment skills and must be for the good. But once again its hard to assess whether training does any good at all, are there any before and after numbers? or is it like crash helmets eg everyone agrees they are a good idea but there are no numbers to prove they save lives. I think we need a new advanced training course .

When I carried out my BikeSafe training a year or so back. The emphasis was on safety with making progress a secondary consideration.

Subjects such as reading the road, hazard awareness etc.

I would like to think it has helped me, although I will admit to red mist moments but that is something I try to control!!!!!

Cheers Bob, ride at 50mph down a 60mph single lane road and see what reaction you get on the de-briefing.
Have a good ride
Regards

I am inclined to agree with Dave as conditions on the road have changed considerably over the last few years. Making 'suitable' progress is the way ahead, not always rapid progress. It must be carried out within the conditions at the time. A lot of I.A.M instructors have come to grief believing that their applied knowledge will keep them safe all the time.

Remember you ride for yourself and not for others. Just be considerate to the other road users.

I found Bikesafe to be helpful and the Police advice given on the day made a lot of sense. It certainly brings home the fact that we are not indestructable. With that in mind enjoy your rides.

Just my thoughts.

Safety is always the top priority in IAM training - it's the first S in
'The Four Esses'. Speed is the last S on that list, and remember that
'speed' means 'appropriate speed' not 'as fast as you can'.

I consider myself a careful rider. When I'm out on my own I certainly don't go hell for leather, breaking the speed limit and overtaking anything in my path - but I make faster, safer progress than before I did the training and I'm better able to deal with the unexpected. You might prefer to potter along looking at the scenery, but you'll still need that training in acceleration and countersteering when someone pulls out in front of you.

I'm just getting old and wise, Certainly my reactions and concentration are not what they were, I also have no reason to make progress on a bike now, I always leave early and enjoy every moment of the ride (except yesterday when a nail was hitting the rear hugger of the Bandit, I thought the engine was broken). Well done hugger!!!!
The roads are in a very rough state and there are so many being re surfaced or closed at the moment.
Just enjoy the day and put that training to good use.
Stay Safe.
